A Year-End Letter from the Founders

Dear Community,

As we wrap up another year, we find ourselves reflecting on the many moments that have woven us all together. From the thrill of white water rafting to the simplicity of a camping getaway, from the serenity found in the heart of nature to the camaraderie forged while sweating it out on the trails of our cherished public lands – each experience has been a testament to the beauty and abundance of the outdoors. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to call this corner of the world home.

It was heartwarming to witness that activities brought together people from all walks of life – veterans spanning generations, their families, youth groups, dedicated community members, and partners. These partners ranged from medical providers and federal agencies to private non-profits and businesses.

This year marked a milestone as we intentionally established a connection between youth and veterans for the

first time – working side-by-side in trail events, or with veterans teaching youth trail skills. It's crucial to note that both veterans and youth often grapple with common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and

even suicidality. Trauma impacts military members, while the modern digital age has given rise to digital addictions among teens and young adults (Source: The Pew Research Center). Bringing youth and veterans together proved to be empowering on both sides.

It was also heartwarming to see veterans’ family members attending some events – healing happens in the circle of the closest and dearest people.

This year, we faced a heartbreaking moment with the loss of a veteran we knew to suicide. This loss has prompted reflection on what more we could have done and the significance of supporting one another. It underscores the importance of mental health awareness within our community as a call to action. We share this information with you because we trust in the strength and compassion of our community to support one another during difficult times.

Looking ahead, our goals are clear – more veterans finding serenity and purpose, more trails cleared, more food waste diverted from the landfill, and more meaningful connections forged. The changes around us may be

constant, but so is our dedication to making our community a better place for everyone. We've tentatively scheduled some events (see below), and there's much more to look forward to. Stay tuned for our impact report for 2023, announcements about new positions to be filled, the launch of an exciting new partnership, and a lineup of upcoming events. We can't wait to share the details with you!

We also want to emphasize our deepest thanks to you, our cherished community, for being an integral part of this journey. So, here's to the next year! Wishing you warmth, joy, and a wonderful holiday season.

With heartfelt gratitude and 'Charlie Mike' (i.e., Continue Mission),

Elena, Rusty and Lian Lininger
