Trail Work on Wild Rose Trail

August 5, 2023

It will be an exciting work party on the Wild Rose Trail with stunning views! This trail needs maintenance, and the work will include debris removal, brushing, tread work, and cross-cut logout. This is a family-friendly event. Everyone is welcome!

Camping is available and encouraged! We’ll meet at Illahee Flats dispersed campground (east off the Dry Creek Store; 1.6 miles off Highway 138). It is an amazing location that has cultural importance — it was a meeting place for American Indians and between 1920-1940 it was used by the CCC. Read more about this location.

At 6 pm on Aug. 4th, we will have Storytelling and Drumming by an Osage tribal descendant whose family had connections to Illahee Flats. If you decide to camp and join storytelling, we recommend coming around 5 pm or earlier to have enough time to set up your tent before storytelling at 6 pm.

Spend time with your family, connect with others, learn history, trail skills, and get a glimpse into experiencing volunteerism with a specific purpose. Our trail crew team, together with USFS staff are excited to lead this trail work event.

When staying overnight, you can enjoy stargazing from camp. The Perseid meteor shower greets stargazers every year from mid-July to late August. It’s a great time for viewing, the Perseids, as the moon will only be 10% illuminated! Don't miss this opportunity for dark sky stargazing. It’s always best farther away from population centers and at higher altitudes.

The campground and trail are located within the Umpqua National Forest. All are on the ancestral homelands of Native people of the Umpqua, Southern Molalla, Yoncalla, and Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. All of which called this forest home since before Mt. Mazama erupted to form Crater Lake 7,000 years ago.

Meeting time: 9 am on August 5th, 2023 at Illahee Flats, Umpqua National Forest, Oregon. To get there, follow gravel road 4760 (east of the Dry Creek Store, off Highway 138) for 1.6 miles; turn right on the 039 spur road and travel a short distance to the Flats. The campground will be available starting Friday, August 5th – Sunday, August 7th.
